Takashi Murakami

Writer: Kelsey TravisKelsey Travis

Murakami is another artist I drew inspiration from in my studio practice project as he has taken inspiration from well-known Pop artists and adapted their aesthetics, ideas and concepts into a modern form of Pop Art. This is closely linked with my work as I have taken inspiration from the likes of Andy Warhol, Eduardo Paolozzi and James Rosenquist in order to gather a better understanding of popular culture, recognisable imagery and imagery of everyday life that can be then transformed into works of art.

Murakami has some fascinating elements to the work he creates and one of the most significant pieces of information I came across was that he uses imagery to stand in for symbols such as: himself, stand in for things in the world he has come across etc... This is intriguing to me as my work uses easily recognisable or image that will draw the viewers into a piece of work, these elements stand in for my memories, experiences and emotions.

Another part of Murakami work that captivated my attention was the aesthetics, the way he composes his work, how imagery fits together and plays off one another and most importantly the colour he uses are effective in each composition. These elements allow me to consider how my own work could be improved, I could narrow down my colour palette in some my future pieces in order to help emphasis the imagery rather than the piece becoming over whelming to look at.
