James Rosenquist

Writer: Kelsey TravisKelsey Travis

James Rosenquist has been an interesting artist that has been part of my studio practice research, I say this as he has a background in sign painting and he explores the role of advertising and the consumerist culture within art. Rosenquist has adapted the skills he learnt whilst in the commercial world of art in order to depict popular cultural icons along with mundane items of everyday. This is extremely close to the work I have been creating as I have been portraying my stories through the use of imagery of everyday items within my work.

Rosenquist shares many features with Paolozzi they both take surrealist elements like taking fragmented imagery that juxtapose one another in a visually distorting way. This is something that I have always been instinctively drawn to and have innately applied within my own work often without realising it.

The way Rosenquist's paintings have been contracted and the colours used are also something that visually links to my own creations. His work is constructed in a precise and visually effective manner also the colours he selects are vibrant, playful and visually eye catching. These features can be seen in my large scale American vs UK painting as well as in my digital print series for my final exhibition.
