Self employed, Wendy Mason and AA2A presentation.

The begging of this lecture discussed the AA2A project which stands for Artists Access to Art colleges. The AA2A scheme was set up in order for artists and art students to visualise their future ambitions by providing facilities throughout the UK for them to use.

Once Wendy has discussed AA2A she began to explain self employment, how you can be both employed and self employed, How self employment is a career and how self employment can allow you the flexibility to work around different aspects of your personal life because you are your own boss. During this presentation I began to learn that self employment is common route amongst artists and designers as it often allows them to continue within an artistic career environment, yet maintain a part time job that may be more beneficial salary wise.

I also began to realise that it doesn't cost you more to be self employed, before this talk I was unaware of this fact, I had the preconception that people who were their own bosses payed more tax, it was harder to earn a living etc... This was cleared up by Wendy as she explained that it is often wise to employ a book keeper if you aren't great with managing your own finances, as this is often a big part of self employment life.

I learnt so much throughout this talk and I took away a lot of valuable information, it has reinforced my ideas about being self employed and how this could work with another part time creative job. Also, by Wendy sending out booklets through our emails this will help us to digest the information in our own time as it was a lot of information to comprehend all at once.
