Compare and contrast

Writer: Kelsey TravisKelsey Travis

This post is meant to compare and contrast my car park project and that of my studio practice module. I think it's vital to demonstrate the differences between the two and the similarities and how one process can be used in multiple ways to achieve a variety of different results.

Below are some examples of my carpark digital drawings and my studio practices ones, as you can see the theme and concept behind each series is completely different from one another. My car park focused on the environment in which my prints were going to be displayed, they aimed to confuse and play with people's perspectives of road signs. I began to concentrate on this idea for my car park project because of my fascination with the rules we should follow as a society and especially with a car park it is almost a controlled environment with signals on how to navigate through the space.

This concept in comparison to my studio practice are polar opposites, as my studio practice modules aims to play with the relationship between text and image, as well as having a further dimension of my memories and experiences being disguised and distorted throughout my work. This project has resulted in significantly more complex compositions that contain an array of juxtaposing imagery, text and abstract prints that result in prints that can be read as one continues story to those who know me personal, yet those who don't can draw their own conclusion and almost become part of my memories and experiences through their participation in the viewing of my work.

Although the two vary conceptually they have one thing in common and that is how I like to play with people's perspectives as well as causing confusion, distortion and fascination by the combination of imagery, processes and ideas.

The scale for both projects - I chose to have both sets the exact same size, yet for completely two different reasons. My car park needed to be on a large scale in order to be visibly seen in such a vast blank space therefore, the size was a functional part of the series as it instantly captures the driver attention on this scale but on a smaller scale it would of disappeared into the space. I also chose this scale for my sign work as I wanted the car park space to appear as though it was a gallery, I did this as I wanted to almost remove the signs from being graphical pieces of work to something that could exist seamlessly within the fine art world and I believe I achieved this.

The scale of my studio practice memory series is inspired by my car park project due to the impact a larger scale can have on viewers but not only this I was also significantly interested in Mark Rothko work in terms of the scale of his abstract paintings. Mark Rothko was interesting as he refers to his work as being something that is intimate and human due to its scale and this resonated with me as I want the viewer to almost become part of my series when they are stood infant of each piece of work. The viewer will become come part of the memory, it becomes an intimate and overpowering experiences because of its scale etc...
